Live Chainstitch Embroidery at The Baldwin School's Holiday Market

Live Chainstitch Embroidery at The Baldwin School's Holiday Market

There's something pretty special about bringing an old-school craft into an old-school school!

I had the pleasure of bringing my chainstitch embroidery machine to The Baldwin School in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, for their annual holiday market, where I spent the evening customizing gifts for students, parents, and families.

And here's a fun little history lesson: The Baldwin School was founded in 1888, just 23 years after the chainstitch embroidery machine was invented! How cool is it that I got to bring a craft with such a rich history into a school that's been around for well over a century?!

I love when my embroidery adventures bring me to places with a story to tell.

A Holiday Market with a Personal Touch

The Baldwin School's holiday market was such a lovely event, organized by a dedicated group of parents who put together an evening of shopping, food, drinks, and festive fun.

The market featured a wonderful assortment of vendors offering unique gifts, from local sports merchandise to upcycled jackets adorned with Hermès scarves. There was also catering, cocktails, and photography, making it a really special evening for the school community. And, of course, a little chainstitch embroidery!

I was invited to provide live, on-site embroidery so that guests could add a personal touch to their holiday shopping. Whether they were looking for something special for themselves or checking a few names off their gift lists, I was there to help make their items one of a kind.

Planning an Embroidery Experience for the Whole School Community

One of my favorite parts of planning a live embroidery event is figuring out how to make the experience work for the people attending.

For The Baldwin School, I collaborated with the parent group organizing the holiday market to develop an embroidery menu that would appeal to students and parents alike.

We wanted to give guests options that would make sense for a variety of ages and interests, while also keeping the customization process manageable during a busy shopping event. I loved how prepared everyone came!

Some parents brought items from home that they wanted personalized. Others purchased gifts from vendors at the market and brought them over for embroidery. There were even guests who had purchased items specifically in advance, knowing they'd have the opportunity to get them embroidered that evening.

It was so much fun seeing what everyone brought to my machine and helping them turn their purchases into something a little more personal.

A Little Something Extra for Holiday Shoppers

One of the things I love about live chainstitch embroidery is how easily it can complement an event that's already happening.

At The Baldwin School, guests could browse the holiday market, support the vendors, enjoy the festivities, and have their gifts customized all in one place.

Instead of simply purchasing a present, they could add a name or a design that made it uniquely theirs.

And because chainstitch embroidery is done by hand on a vintage-style machine, there's a little bit of entertainment built into the experience, too! Guests can watch the stitching happen right in front of them, which is always a fun conversation starter.

We stayed busy throughout the evening, and I had such a wonderful time getting to know the parents and staff who made the event possible.

Live Embroidery for School Events, Holiday Markets & More!

I think live embroidery is such a fun addition to school events because it works for so many different types of celebrations.

Holiday markets, parent association events, alumni gatherings, school fundraisers, and community celebrations can all benefit from a hands-on personalization experience.

And the customization options can be tailored to the school, the audience, and the occasion!

When I work with an event organizer, I love getting involved in the planning process. From creating an embroidery menu to discussing which items can be customized and how to manage guest orders, there are plenty of details to consider before the event begins.

My background in project management comes in especially handy here. I enjoy helping organizers work through the creative and logistical pieces so they can focus on hosting a wonderful event.

Whether guests bring their own items, shop from participating vendors, or receive a preselected gift, I can help determine what makes the most sense for the event.

A Very Merry Evening at Baldwin!

A huge thank you to The Baldwin School and the wonderful parent organizers for inviting me to be part of their holiday market!

It was such a pleasure to spend the evening in a beautiful historic building, surrounded by a caring school community, and helping families create personalized holiday gifts.

There's something really special about being able to combine a traditional craft with a modern celebration, and this event was a perfect example of why I love what I do.
