Union Station, closed for a private event, was the perfect venue for hosting thousands of attendees at the 10,000 small businesses reception. Because it was such a large event, I was requested to recruit additional chainstitch embroidery artists to accompany me. Two additional embroidery artists, plus our assistants, all traveled to Washington, D.C., to customize hundreds of dog bandanas for the evening's event.
This reception felt like the ultimate hybrid of my worlds. As a full-time program manager for a Fortune 50 company, I am often wrangling groups of people from across the country to work together. Being the lead chainstitch embroidery artist felt like a similar role. I worked with our event agency to understand requirements, and after recruiting a team of embroiderers to accompany me, I worked with them to understand their travel expenses and lodging requirements. Our client worked directly with me, and I coordinated with the rest of the team. This streamlined our communication efforts and allowed us to move quickly and efficiently, especially during an unprecedented venue change due to the government shutdown! We also had some last-minute requirement updates with thread colors & matching table skirts, which I swiftly coordinated and managed with the team.
Not only did it feel like a professional accomplishment to travel outside of Philadelphia for my embroidery business, but I felt fulfilled giving other artists a job, and grateful they were there to assist me. Karen Brown (Lu & Company), Arvay Adams, and I joined forces and worked as a real team, supporting each other through the rush of orders as the event progressed.
Needless to say, we travel out of state for live embroidery events!
